Bafana Bafana has finally departed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico after a dramatic visa crisis temporarily grounded the squad at OR Tambo International Airport.
The senior men’s national team was scheduled to fly to Mexico on Sunday, 31 May 2026, but players and staff were reportedly blocked from boarding after multiple members of the travelling delegation lacked the required United States transit visas.
Administrative error causes major travel disruption
Because the 2026 FIFA World Cup is being hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada, transit through the US forms part of several team travel routes and tournament logistics.
According to reports, the missing visas triggered a last-minute administrative crisis for the South African delegation.
The situation forced urgent intervention from:
- South African Football Association
- Department of International Relations and Cooperation
- The US Consulate
Emergency meetings were reportedly held on Sunday evening and Monday morning to resolve the issue before the squad’s revised departure.
Squad departs for Mexico after visa intervention
Following the emergency intervention, the full Bafana Bafana playing squad successfully secured their travel documentation and departed Johannesburg on a special charter flight on Monday afternoon.
However, not everyone made the trip.
Assistant coach Helman Mkhalele and head of security Mdu Mbatha were reportedly left behind after their visas were unexpectedly denied by US authorities.
SAFA has since established a three-member organising committee, including team manager Vincent Tseka, to oversee operations and avoid further logistical problems during the tournament.
Hugo Broos faces disrupted preparation plans
The roughly 30-hour delay has reportedly disrupted coach Hugo Broos’ acclimatisation and preparation schedule ahead of the tournament opener.
Despite the setback, the team has now safely arrived at its base camp in Pachuca, Mexico.
Bafana Bafana’s 2026 World Cup fixtures
South Africa will compete in Group A during the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Upcoming fixtures include:
Warm-up match
- South Africa vs Jamaica
Group Stage
- Mexico vs South Africa – 11 June 2026, Mexico City
- South Africa vs Czechia – 18 June 2026, Atlanta, Georgia
- South Africa vs South Korea – 24 June 2026, Monterrey
The opening clash against co-hosts Mexico carries extra significance for South African fans, echoing the famous 2010 FIFA World Cup opener between the two nations in Johannesburg.
SAFA under pressure over administrative oversight
The visa mishap has already triggered criticism online, with many supporters questioning how such a major administrative issue emerged days before the tournament.
The incident also places added scrutiny on SAFA’s tournament planning and operational management ahead of one of the country’s biggest football moments in years.
