NEED TO KNOW
- Cyclist Colin Wilson died while participating in the Easter International Cycling Grand Prix in Trinidad and Tobago on April 3
- He attempted to avoid a fallen cyclist but collided with the fencing lining the track and later died from his injuries, authorities said
- Wilson's wife said she was watching her husband compete on YouTube when the accident happened
The wife of a renowned cyclist, who died in a freak accident at a racing event, recalled watching the tragedy unfold on YouTube.
“I thought, ‘Wait Colin fall?’ and then I just saw all the blood and I say, ‘Father Lord, something gone wrong,’ I just thought he hit his head,” Tricia Jeffers told the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian.
Phillip Watts, minister of the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, said in a news release on social media that cyclist Colin "Creepy" Wilson died during the 2026 Easter International Cycling Grand Prix at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on Friday, April 3.
“Tragically, during a six-lap Masters 40-49 event, Wilson was involved in a fatal crash,” he stated. “It is understood he attempted to avoid a fallen cyclist but collided with the fencing lining the track, sustaining critical injuries on his neck.”
“Despite immediate medical attention, Wilson succumbed to his injuries,” the minister added.
Jeffers told the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian that after seeing what happened to her husband while watching the event online with one of her sons, she drove to San Fernando, where she learned that Wilson died.
“Even as I was driving down the road to south,” she recalled to the outlet, “I wasn’t expecting to hear death, I just thought he would have been in the hospital. I thought I would have spent the night in the hospital and come up the road in the morning, but I wasn’t expecting to reach there and hear that he died.”
Jeffers, who shared three children with Wilson, added that she recognized her husband as the victim involved due to his cycling kit, which he reportedly got for the competition.
“He said, ‘Tricia I going, I going to put us on the map,’ he always told me that whenever he was going to cycle," she added. "That was the last thing he told me.”
Following the tragic incident, Watts said he contacted the country's Cycling Federation President Rowena Williams and paid tribute to Wilson.
“Wilson was more than a champion cyclist, he was a pioneer who inspired generations of young athletes in Trinidad and Tobago,” the minister said. “His passion for the sport and steadfast commitment to excellence will be forever remembered. This is a profound loss for our sporting community, and my heart goes out to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
The Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation also acknowledged Wilson’s death in a statement shared on Saturday, April 4, writing in part, “This loss is deeply felt across our cycling community. Colin was a valued member of the sporting fraternity, and his presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him and shared in his passion for cycling.”

PEOPLE contacted Robert Parris, the mayor of San Fernando, on Tuesday, April 7, but did not receive an immediate response.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, Parris said he was open to an investigation into the accident, out of respect for the victim’s family. He also added that a park facilities manager is expected to complete a report on the incident.
“I really and truly hoping that something comes out of this, because nobody expected this," Jeffers said.

Confirmed Arsenal team v Sporting Club – Rice starts
Arsenal travel to Lisbon to face Sporting Club in the Champions League quarterfinal, with Mikel Arteta naming his starting eleven for the crucial encounter.
Sporting head into the fixture full of confidence following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Bodo/Glimt in their previous Champions League outing. That result completed a remarkable turnaround after they had suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg, underlining their resilience and attacking quality. While Arsenal are widely regarded as a stronger side than the Norwegian team, their recent loss to Southampton in the FA Cup has given Sporting reason to believe they can compete.

Arsenal’s European Form Under Scrutiny
In Europe, Arsenal have been highly impressive, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition and winning all but one of their matches so far. This consistency has established them as one of the standout teams in the tournament. However, their recent domestic form has raised concerns, and they will be determined to ensure that any dip does not carry over into their European performances.
Sporting, known for their ability to challenge top sides, will look to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm and potentially bring an end to their unbeaten run. The Gunners, meanwhile, are focused on finishing the season strongly and achieving success on the continental stage.
A Test of Character in Lisbon
Arsenal enjoyed success the last time they visited Sporting, securing a convincing 5-1 victory in the Champions League last season. Despite that result, this encounter is expected to be far more demanding. Each match presents a new challenge, and recent form suggests that Arsenal cannot afford complacency.
The Champions League is a competition that leaves little room for error, and Arsenal must demonstrate its quality on the pitch. This fixture offers them an opportunity to respond to recent setbacks and reassert themselves as genuine contenders, but only if they rise to the challenge in Lisbon.

Returkampen i London spilles onsdag i neste uke.
